My Yard Charity: For the community, by the community. A Harrow based registered charity.
Like many areas around the UK, the Harrow community has people from starkly different socio-economic backgrounds. From gentrification and famed private school to families living in temporary accommodation who cannot work, living on low incomes, and struggling to feed their families. It is unsettling that we are in the 2020s, inside the sixth-biggest global economy, yet the UK has more than 8% of its population living in food poverty. The My Yard community is finding solutions to poverty and generating empowering change.
There IS enough food to feed everyone. The challenge is ensuring healthy, surplus supermarket produce ends up on the plates of those who need it and not in the bin. On average, My Yard rescues 1 ton of healthy food surplus a week.
ALL community members are important and have valued roles to play. We all have needs and something to give back, and we all have things to learn from one another.
Listening and supporting each other naturally develops lasting community bonds, prevents social isolation and boosts individual and community wellbeing. We are there for each other. The My Yard’s inclusive community runs youth groups, social events, gardening clubs and surplus food delivery services to those most in need.
We believe the My Yard community model is replicable and can benefit and empower communities right across the UK. Together we can reduce food waste, eliminate food poverty and enable humans from every socio-economic level to prosper, help each other, feel valued and empowered. We’d love to hear from you if you need advice, want to donate, fundraise, or get involved.
